A visit to the Skeleton Coast will unravel the geological history of these stunning landscapes that garnered worldwide fame due to plenty a ship running aground here. The Eduard Bohlen, Dunedin Star, Cawdor Castle, Suiderkus, Sir Charles Elliot and Kaio Maru have all met their fate along these shores. There is so much to discover in the Skeleton Coast National Park covering 16,845 km
2, stretching from the Kunene River in the north to the Ugab River in the south. Declared a nature reserve in 1971, the park protects almost a third of Namibia’s coastline.
Make Shipwreck Lodge your base to explore this area enshrouded in mystery. The eco-friendly, solar-powered lodge boasts unique shipwreck-shaped chalets. Tucked in between the desert dunes, eight twin/double chalets and two family chalets offer stunning views of the tumultuous Atlantic. A wood-burning stove is synonymous with warmth and cosiness on chillier nights and is available in each chalet. There are also a writing desk, bedside lamp and a safe for that extra peace of mind to guard your valuables.
Gather with fellow adventurers in the dining area, which is also known as the heart of the lodge. The outdoor deck is ideal for enjoying a sundowner, and the snug interior will warm you from the inside out.
Activities include excursions to
Möwe Bay, located only 45 km away. This is also where self-drive guests park their cars and where fly-in guests are picked up. Get camera-ready to photograph the beautiful Flamingo Pools, shipwrecks such as the Suiderkus and the Karimona, the deserted Westies diamond mine and what is left of a Ventura Bomber. Excursions by 4x4 vehicles will take you to the Hoarusib River and the Clay Castles. Keep your eyes open for the fauna and flora adapted to survive in these harsh conditions, which might include birds, brown hyena, desert-adapted elephant and lion. Sunny weather will allow for a beach lunch if you are feeling up for a scenic lunch.
For action-seekers who are looking for a different kind of experience, why not try your hand at fishing? The beloved Namibian Coast is an angler’s paradise. The best of all is that you can have your catch of the day for dinner, caringly prepared by the chefs.
