Description

If Namibia’s diamond history is a story of desert gems, then the abandoned town of Kolmanskop is the origin of the tale. On this Kolmanskop tour, you‘ll explore the town that was inhabited for less than 50 years, from when the first diamond was found in the area until the last families moved away, leaving it completely to the elements. Starting at the Entertainment Hall, you‘ll find out how miners thrived in the severe, harsh, desert landscape, and hear the rich history of these pristine diamonds’ discovery and extraction. You’ll learn what it took to make life habitable for miners and their families, including how they sourced drinking water and stored food. You‘ll see where these new arrivals lived, the architect‘s and the doctors‘ homes, and the former hospital building. You‘ll be amazed at how much activity there was in such a small town, within the short time from when mining took off until the unexpected surprise of mineral depletion. You’ll also get a sense of how deeply intertwined this industry was with its geography, and what conditions ended up carrying these stones all the way here from the mighty Orange River. On this tour of Namibia’s Ghost Town, you‘ll: • See where opera singers and gymnasts from Europe performed in the town • Take in Millionaire‘s Avenue where the mine director, the accountant, the architect, and the schoolmaster lived in impressive houses • Hear how fresh drinking water was brought into the small town • Pop into the town‘s Casino building, which had its own bowling alley • Find out why a doctor ordered a wine cellar to be constructed under the hospital building By the end of this 40-minute tour, you‘ll have a deeper appreciation for the sheer grit and endurance it took to build one of the most advanced and sophisticated towns for its time in all of the African continent.
