In 1948 Willem Christoffel van Coller bought an area to the size of 33,000 hectares with the purpose of farming Karakul sheep. His wife Elsie Sophia named it Solitaire due to the atmosphere of seclusion and solitude. Today the small village acts as a gateway to the famous Sossusvlei area and also provides the visitor with a filling station, bakery, workshop, restuarant, lodge and a little coffee shop. Solitaire has also gained fame for the scrumptious apple crumble made by local resident Percy Cross. A picturesque lodge lies just outside of the town with various accommodation styles available.
