Ongulumbashe Memorial

The Ongulumbashe Memorial commemorates the start of the "Bush War" in 1966 when South African forces launched a 23 year war against the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO) of Namibia. Their base at Ongulumbashe was the target of Operation Wildebeest by the South Africans. The end of the war would see Namibia proclaimed as independent in 1990 with SWAPO winning the elections. 26 August 1966 is celebrated in Namibia as Heroes’ Day and is a public holiday. Ongulumbashe can be accessed via the village of Tsandi, local guides will show you the way.
