Aussenkehr

The name Aussenkehr, German for "outer bend", refers to the way the Orange River flows at the base of the settlement. Labeled as a hub of agricultural activities, Aussenkehr is an oasis amidst a desert landscape. The farm was bought in 1988 by Yugoslav Dusan Vasiljevic and table grapes were planted as an experiment. It proved so successful that mangoes, citrus fruits, lucerne and dates are now also cultivated. The dry climate allows for the grapes to be harvested 3 to 5 weeks earlier than other plantations, ensuring produce ready for the markets well beforehand. The Orange River and nearby canyon systems provide visitors with various adventure activities including rafting, rock climbing and fly fishing. With beautiful sunsets and game viewing opportunities, Aussenkehr is a welcome retreat from the dryness of the desert.
