Description
This tour takes you across five key locations in Windhoek, exploring Namibia’s history of colonialism, apartheid, and liberation through the lives of the activists, community leaders, and freedom fighters who challenged colonial oppression and fought for freedom.
The journey begins at the Genocide Memorial in the city centre, where you will gain insight into German colonial rule and the Ovaherero and Nama genocide, widely regarded as the first genocide of the 20th century. Learn how this period left deep scars on Namibia and discover some of the resistance leaders who stood up against German colonial rule.
From there, we travel to the Old Location Cemetery, one of the most important sites in Namibia’s struggle for independence. This stop forms a link between the German colonial era and South African occupation, while shedding light on the activists and community leaders who resisted forced removals and stood up against the apartheid regime.
Our next stop takes us into Katutura, where you will learn about two influential and highly respected icons of resistance. One fought against German colonial rule, while the other challenged a segregated and deeply unjust education system, demonstrating how resistance took different forms across generations.
We then stop at the famous Single Quarters, one of Windhoek’s most vibrant community markets. Here, you will enjoy a traditional Kapana lunch and drink, included in the tour price. Experience local food culture, see how many Namibians eat and gather, and enjoy one of Windhoek’s most vibrant community spaces while sampling Kapana, salsa, and pap.
After lunch, we visit a former workers’ compound, where you will learn about the contract labour system and how migrant workers and trade unions contributed to Namibia’s road to independence.
The tour concludes back in the city centre. At the final stop, you will hear the story of a national hero whose life spanned German colonialism to South African occupation. Having lived through and resisted oppression across these different periods, his story reflects both the hardships and resilience that shaped Namibia’s journey to freedom.
