Description
Discover Spitzkoppe on a full day tour with a private guide from Swakopmund. Admire the brilliantly-colored granite peaks of Spitzkoppe that rise abruptly out of the surrounding plains, and hear detailed explanations about the surroundings throughout your tour from your guide. Begin your day with hotel pickup at around 9 AM in Swakopmund. Drive 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) eastward of the coastal Atlantic to your first stop, the Martin Luther steam tractor. Learn about the history of the only material remnant of the first attempt to introduce mechanized transport in Namibia, and receive a brief description of the area and Namibia in general. Next, drive inland for about 1 hour and 45 minutes to the stark grandeur of Gross Spitzkoppe, an inselberg or inland mountain often described as the Matterhorn of Namibia because of its shape. Rising 1728 meters (5670 feet) above sea level, Spitzkoppe's highest peak stands about 700 meters (2297 feet) above the desert floor and poses a perennial challenge to the serious mountaineer; the summit was first scaled only in 1946. Marvel at the striking colors of the mountains, visible from great distances away. After a short introduction to the local Damara people who reside in the area, have the opportunity to view the natural flora of the region before heading to the spectacular rock paintings of the Spitzkoppe. Make sure to take your camera with you as both the Gross and Klein Spitkoppe, the Pontak Mountains, and the associated Bushman artwork are ideal for photography, whether amateur or professional. Your tour concludes with drop-off back at your hotel at approximately 4 PM. Lunch in the wild is included with the tour.Includes
